What is an NIE?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a personal identification number assigned to foreigners who have economic, professional, or legal interests in Spain. It is not a residence permit — it is an administrative ID number used in tax, property, and official procedures.

Who needs an NIE?

  • You own or plan to buy property in Spain
  • You earn rental income from Spanish property
  • You need to open a Spanish bank account
  • You need to file taxes in Spain
  • You act as a company director or shareholder in Spain
  • You carry out most formal legal or financial transactions in Spain

When does this apply?

You typically need an NIE before you can:

  • Register property ownership
  • File Spanish tax returns (such as Modelo 210)
  • Register short-term rental activity
  • Obtain a Spanish digital certificate

In practice, the NIE is often the first administrative step before other registrations or tax obligations can be completed.

What happens if you don't have one?

  • Property purchases may be delayed or blocked
  • Tax filings may not be accepted
  • Rental registrations may be blocked
  • You may not be able to access official Spanish portals

How to obtain an NIE

In Spain

  1. Book an appointment with the Policía Nacional (Foreigners Office)
  2. Submit the EX-15 form
  3. Provide your passport and justification (e.g. property purchase, tax need)

From abroad

  1. Apply through a Spanish consulate
  2. Provide required documentation and purpose for the NIE

Processing times vary depending on location and demand.

Official authority

NIE numbers are issued by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior through the Policía Nacional.

How Amanda uses this

Amanda asks about your NIE because it is required for most Spanish tax and property obligations. Without an NIE, several filings and registrations shown in your exposure report cannot be completed. When you add your NIE in the Identity module, Amanda can confirm you're ready to proceed with Modelo 210 and other Spanish tax forms.
