HMRC Online Services

HMRC Online Services is the UK government's digital system for managing your tax affairs.

It allows individuals and businesses to:

  • File tax returns
  • View tax records
  • Make payments
  • Update personal details
  • Communicate securely with HMRC

Most UK tax compliance today happens through these online accounts.

Who needs an HMRC online account?

You typically need one if you:

  • File a Self Assessment tax return
  • Have a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference)
  • Run a business or are self-employed
  • Are a UK landlord
  • Need to manage National Insurance or other personal tax matters

If Amanda has identified a UK tax obligation for you, you will almost certainly need access to HMRC Online.

Types of HMRC online accounts

There are two main systems:

1) Personal Tax Account

Used for:

  • Viewing PAYE income and tax
  • Checking National Insurance contributions
  • Managing Child Benefit or tax credits
  • Basic personal tax information

2) Self Assessment / Business Tax Account

Used for:

  • Filing Self Assessment tax returns
  • Viewing your UTR
  • Submitting returns for self-employment or rental income
  • Paying tax owed

If you are filing a tax return as a landlord or self-employed person, this is the account that matters most.

How to get access

You need a Government Gateway account.

Steps usually include:

  • Go to the HMRC online services portal
  • Create or sign in with a Government Gateway user ID
  • Verify your identity (passport, UK address history, or financial questions)
  • Link your tax account (for example, using your UTR)

Once set up, you can file returns, view deadlines, and see payment history.

What Amanda assumes

Amanda assumes that:

  • If you have a UK filing obligation, you either already have an HMRC online account, or will need to create one to comply

Amanda does not access your HMRC account directly, but it helps you understand:

  • What filings are required
  • Which HMRC systems you'll need to use
  • Where to go for official submission

Common problems

Lost Government Gateway ID or password

HMRC has a recovery process, but it can take time.

Account not linked to the right tax

Sometimes your Self Assessment account is separate from your Personal Tax Account.

No UTR yet

You usually must register for Self Assessment first before your online account can be fully used for filing.
